Multi-funded Research

DFID's multifunded research can cover a number of different mechanisms to share the costs of and/or collaborate on research.

Multilateral research is where DFID has contributed funding to a multilateral or intergovernmental organisation, this may include a Memoranda of Understanding agreement or contributions to a trust fund with for example the United Nations, or it may be the provision of unrestricted funding to bodies such as the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).

Joint funding is where more than one donor contributes to a certain strategic objective, programme or project, usually managed by a non-governmental body. This may include projects like SciDev.Net, where a number of bilateral donors agree on a common objective and all contribute funding, or it may be a concordat arrangement with a UK Research Council.

In both of these examples DFID engagement is likely to be in strategy/policy formulation and providing funds. We would not generally project manage such activities. Such programmes would not normally be competitively tendered.

In all cases where DFID's Central Research Department is part of a multifunded programme, outputs would need to contribute significantly to the achievement of the objectives set out in DFID's Research Funding Framework.
