RSS Hints and Tips

RSS in Plain English and Video

  • News or RSS feeds are an easy way to keep up to date with additions to R4D.
  • Instead of you browsing through R4D for new information on your chosen subjects, the feed will alert you about any new information relating to the chosen subject.
  • The feed reader will display item information and a direct link to the appropriate web page.
  • To use RSS feeds you need a 'Feed Reader' which receives and displays all the feeds that you subscribe to. The latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari have built-in readers, so you do not necessarily need to install a separate feed reader.
  • If you create a personal webpage, such as iGoogle, MyYahoo, MyMSN etc, you will be able to add (subscribe to) new feeds just by clicking on the
    icon on any page.
  • The feed reader built into your personal webpage will display boxes for each of your feeds. The boxes will have new headlines and a direct link to the appropriate web page.
  • If you use RSS Feeds a lot, you may prefer to have a standalone feed reader running on your computer which is set to highlight new information. Free readers include NetNewsWire Lite for Macs or FeedReader for Windows.
  • Once the feed reader is installed on your computer, select the relevant feed information in the R4D Feed Search, copy the url in the address field of the browser and paste it into the "Add Feed" function of the feed reader (each reader handles this slightly differently so you will have to follow your feed reader's instructions to a certain extent but the general principle is the same in all cases).

Subscribe to R4D

R4D offers you a number of simple ways to stay on top of new research in your field:
You can sign up for our monthly e-newsletter for a general picture of what is new on the site. Alternatively, you can choose one of our themed or country-specific e-alerts below, which sends you an email each time there is a new addition on the topic of your choice.

If you prefer RSS feeds, R4D has not only a 'Latest from R4D' feed but also themed feeds on the most popular topics and countries. In addition you can create your own project or document feed, tailored to the key words, countries, or DFID programmes that you are most interested in.
