Objectives:
The programme supports agricultural science and technology by giving access to international resources of science information, by disseminating the outputs of agricultural research in Africa and through Agricultural information management systems including Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA), the Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research for Development (CIARD) initiative, the Kenya Agricultural Information Network (KAINet), and the Ghana Agricultural Information Network System (GAINS)
Progress and Impact:
Principal achievements under this programme:
- launch of the international collaborative initiative on "Coherence in Information for Agricultural Research and Development" (CIARD) with the objective of making public domain agricultural information truly accessible (www.ciard.net)
- significant advances in open technical standards and public domain tools for interoperability in agricultural information systems (www.fao.org/aims)
- successful establishment of pilot national networks of institutional repositories of agricultural research information in Ghana and Kenya, with lessons learned shared for the benefit of other countries in partnership with GFAR, FARA, and other such bodies (www.gains.org.gh and www.kainet.or.ke)
- continuing increases in use of the AGORA programme - with over 60 publishers providing content to more than 1600 participating institutions from 100 countries. also benefitting from with significant system enhancements to the user experience (www.aginternetwork.org)
