Recent studies from the Centre on the health benefits of zinc promise exciting results. In relevant trials, providing zinc for 10 days in addition to ORS for every child with diarrhoea has reduced overall mortality by 50%. The strategy developed and tested at the Centre has been adopted by WHO and UNICEF. Major impact on cholera epidemics in Bangladesh so that nationally there are far lower mortality rates.
