Social and Political Change - IntroductionThe prime purpose of DFID is to contribute to the eradication of world poverty. In support of this aim, DFID’s research objective is to promote the production and uptake of technologies and policies that will contribute to poverty eradication and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. Development Research CentresThere are currently six Development Research Centres and three Research Programme Consortia managed by the Social, Political and Environment Change Team. These are five year research programmes, each led by a single institution working on a specific topic in partnership with institutions in the north and south. The aim is for the programme to generate policy-relevant research that will help the wider development community and DFID to achieve their objectives.

Reflecting the timescale for achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, it aims to follow, up till 2015 the lives of 8,000 children born in the year 2000 and a parallel group of children who were eight years old in that year in each country. Young Lives is managed by Professor Jo Boyden at Queen Elizabeth House, University of Oxford, who was appointed Director of the project in July 2005. Save the Children UK and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine are partner institutions. This scheme aims to fund scientific research on issues relating to economic development and quality of life in less developed countries with the potential for impact on policy and practice for poverty reduction. Applications (to ESRC) are invited from researchers based in recognised higher education institutions, research organisations or organisations with a credible research capacity in both the UK and worldwide.
Responsive ProgrammeView ListThere remain a number of small social science projects funded under the Responsive Programme. DFID no longer runs a responsive programme. This has been superseded by collaborative programmes with the UK research councils.
