IntroductionWe know that growth is even more important in reducing poverty than was previously thought, and DFID wants to put it at the heart of international development. The challenge now is to take knowledge about what influences growth and apply it to the priorities of developing countries. The new International Growth Centre will introduce a major new research programme to support individual countries with their growth strategies. The research will also address questions that matter across countries and regions for building an economy that poor people can take part in, as well as growth that can be sustained for future generations. The support to the current Growth RPCs and multi-funded programmes is unaffected. See the working paper on Economic Growth which informed the Research Strategy 2008-2013. Infrastructure programmes in Transport and Water and Sanitation are included under growth.
The current DFID education research programmes on Improving the Quality of Education, Improving Access to Education and Improving Educational Outcomes remain unaffected. These were guided by the Research Funding Framework 2005-2007 and are still very relevant in the new research strategy. The Research Strategy 2008-2013 will continue to target our education research investments to help speed up progress towards the MDGs. We will look to strengthen our work in existing areas of education research e.g. in states where progress towards the MDGs is slowest. See the working paper on Education which informed the Research Strategy 2008-2013. The timing of research competitions and calls for proposals can be found in the Implementation Timetable. |
